Lawns in Dundas: What We See

They call Dundas the Valley Town for a reason. It sits at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment at the western end of Lake Ontario, wrapped by the protected Dundas Valley, and it has stayed close to the same size for decades, partly because it hasn't grown into the conservation land around it. The old Desjardins Canal once made the town a shipping hub for the farms and mills nearby.

For lawns, that history adds up to three things. First, older homes on older lots, many under a canopy of mature trees that compete with grass for light and water. Second, yards at the foot of slopes that collect runoff from higher ground after every heavy rain. Third, tight access: narrow side yards, old garages and fences that leave little room for equipment. None of that is solved by laying new sod on top of the old problem.

So a Dundas job usually starts with questions. How many hours of direct sun does this part of the lawn get? Where does the water go when it rains hard? Can a machine reach the backyard, or does every roll go in by hand? The answers decide whether you need replacement, drainage, grading, or an honest conversation about what will grow under that maple.

Downtown & King Street West

The historic core along King Street West. Older homes on tighter lots, mature street trees, and side yards often too narrow for most equipment.

Spencer Creek Corridor

Lower ground along the creek that drains the valley toward Cootes Paradise. Yards here are worth checking for drainage before any new sod goes down.

The Valley Edge

Homes backing onto the wooded slopes of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Runoff from higher ground and shade from the trees both shape what a lawn needs.

Why Us

Why Dundas Homeowners Choose Right On Sod

Straight Talk About Shade

Kentucky Bluegrass wants sun. If part of your yard won't grow it, we'll say so before you spend the money, instead of after the sod thins out.

Drainage First, Sod Second

Wet ground kills new sod. Where the water is the problem, we recommend the regrade or drain it needs before the lawn goes down.

Built for Tight Access

Narrow side yards and old fences don't stop us. Access is priced in the quote, so it isn't a surprise later.

Insured, Covered and Guaranteed

A WSIB-covered, liability-insured crew, and our 14-Day Fresh-Cut Sod Guarantee, which covers sod that is weed-free and healthy upon delivery and installation, with proper watering. Sod comes fresh from locally grown, premium Ontario sod farms.

Dundas FAQ

Dundas Sod FAQ

Will sod grow under my mature trees?

It depends on the light. Kentucky Bluegrass needs several hours of direct sun a day, and under a dense canopy it thins out no matter how well it's laid. In partly shaded spots it can do well with the right prep and watering. We'll look at your yard and tell you honestly where sod will thrive and where it won't.

Can you work on narrow, older lots with tight access?

Yes. Many Dundas lots have narrow side yards and old fences, so we plan how materials and old sod get in and out before we quote. Tight access can add labour, and if it does, that's shown in your on-site quote.

Do you install French drains in valley yards?

Yes. Yards at the foot of a slope often collect runoff from higher ground. A French drain intercepts that water and carries it to a proper outlet, and a regrade often helps the lawn shed water too. Drains run $50–$70 per linear foot, subject to 13% HST, and we restore the lawn over the trench.
