Lawns in Ancaster: What We See

Ancaster sits on the Niagara Escarpment above the Dundas Valley, and you can see it in the yards. On terrain like this, water moves fast. On a sloped lot, rain that should soak in runs across the surface instead. If the ground wasn't prepared properly, it carries soil, and freshly laid sod, along with it.

Lot sizes vary a lot, from townhouse strips near Golf Links Road to large properties on the valley side. A bigger lawn changes the numbers. At $2.00–$2.50 per sq ft, a 5,000 sq ft yard is a $10,000–$12,500 installation before HST. That's why we measure every yard and walk every slope before we put a price on paper.

On escarpment-side lots, grading is usually the real job. Shaping the slope so water sheds gently, instead of cutting channels, is what keeps a new lawn level and rooted through its first spring melt.

Old Ancaster Village

Around Wilson Street, the old village's main street, with the Tiffany Falls trail starting just off it. Older lots and mature trees mean shade, roots and settled ground to work around.

Meadowlands

Bounded by the Linc and Highway 403, Garner Road, Stone Church Road and Southcote Road. Flatter, newer lots, where compacted builder grade under thin topsoil is the main issue.

The Dundas Valley Side

Homes toward the Dundas Valley Conservation Area and Ancaster Creek, which spills over Sherman Falls. Slopes and creek-side ground make grading and drainage the first conversation.

Grading & Levelling

On escarpment-side lots the slope decides whether new sod stays put. We check the grade on every job; reshaping it so water sheds gently is an add-on of about $1.00 per sq ft.

Sod Installation

Fresh-cut Kentucky Bluegrass, laid tight and rolled, on Meadowlands lots and big valley-side yards alike, for $2.00–$2.50 per sq ft. Prep included: ground clearing and preliminary soil levelling.

French Drains & Yard Drainage

Where water coming down the hill keeps the low side of a lawn soaked, a French drain carries it off before it pools, from $50–$70 per linear foot. Afterward, we restore the lawn over the trench.

Sod Removal & Lawn Replacement

Shaded, root-filled lawns in Old Ancaster and worn-out turf on Meadowlands lots are cut out, hauled away and replaced for $3.00–$3.75 per sq ft, disposal included.

Ancaster FAQ

Ancaster Sod FAQ

Can new sod hold on a sloped yard?

Yes, sod holds a slope far better than seed, because it arrives as a mat with its roots already knit together. The prep matters most: the grade should shed water evenly instead of channelling, the soil should be firm, and the rows go across the slope. Grading is quoted as an add-on where it's needed. On steeper sections, sod is usually pinned in place until it roots.

Do you take on large lots?

Yes. We measure on site so the quote matches your actual lawn area, from Meadowlands lots to properties on the valley side. Tell us roughly how big the yard is in the quote form.

Can you re-sod a townhouse yard in a Meadowlands condo complex?

Often, yes, but check with your condominium board or property manager first. In many complexes the corporation looks after landscaping and has to approve changes to it. We can quote the work for you or for the corporation directly.
