How to Measure Your Lawn
You don't need to be exact. Within 10% is plenty for an estimate.
- Rectangles: multiply length by width in feet. A front yard 40 ft wide and 20 ft deep is 800 sq ft.
- Odd shapes: split the lawn into rough rectangles, measure each and add them together. Don't count beds, patios or the driveway.
- Curves and corners: estimate them as half a rectangle and round up.
- Metric: measure in metres and pick m² in the calculator. One square metre is about 10.8 sq ft.
- French drains: pace out the route the water should follow, from where it collects to where it can drain. One long step is roughly 2.5 ft.

What Changes the Price
Lawn Size
The biggest factor: the per-square-foot rate applies across the whole area, and small jobs are covered by the $1,500 minimum.
Removal and Disposal
Taking out an old lawn and hauling it away costs more than sodding bare ground. That's the difference between our installation and replacement prices.
Grade and Soil Condition
Low spots, a slope toward the house or thin, compacted soil all need work before sod goes down. Grading adds about $1.00 per sq ft.
Access
Wide gates and open side yards let us bring equipment straight in. Narrow access, steep slopes or backyards reachable only by wheelbarrow take more labour.
Drainage Needs
If the yard won't drain, new sod won't last. Adding a French drain ($50–$70 per linear foot) or extra grading protects the investment.
Example Prices for Hamilton Yards
Calculated with our current rates, before 13% HST:
- 800 sq ft front lawn, new sod: $1,600–$2,000
- Same front lawn with grading: $2,400–$2,800
- 1,500 sq ft backyard replacement (removal and disposal included): $4,500–$5,625
- 300 sq ft patch replacement: $900–$1,125 in materials and labour, so the $1,500 minimum applies
- 60 ft French drain: $3,000–$4,200
Sod Cost FAQ
Is the per-square-foot price all-in?
It covers the work described for each service: for installation, ground clearing and preliminary soil prep and levelling, plus fresh-cut Kentucky Bluegrass laid and rolled; for replacement, the same plus removal and disposal of the old lawn. Grading and French drains are priced separately, and HST is added on top. Your on-site quote lists exactly what's included.
Is there a minimum job?
Yes, $1,500. It covers the cost of bringing a crew, equipment and fresh sod to your property. For a small area, it often makes sense to add a second section or a repair to the same visit.
Do prices include HST?
No. All our prices are subject to 13% HST, and your quote shows the tax separately.
How accurate is the calculator?
It uses our actual per-square-foot rates, so if your measurement is close, the range will be too. The final price depends on what we find on site, such as access, slope and soil, which is why we confirm it in person before booking.
Why do sod quotes vary so much between companies?
Mostly because of what's included. A low quote might lay sod straight onto compacted clay with no grading, skip removal, or charge disposal separately. Ask every company what prep, grading, removal and clean-up are included, and whether they're insured and WSIB-covered.
